Snow Angels

My grandkids love fried scones or beignets as they call them in France. Fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar. We were making them for breakfast and my grandson suggested that we cut them out with Gingerbread Man cookie cutters. It was a huge hit and we decided to call them “Snow Angels”. My grand-daughter put Nutella on hers for a Mud Angel, and Cinnamon-sugar mixture for a dirt angel, and honey for a Sweet Angel. SNOW ANGELS Makes about 15 SNOW ANGELS

3/4 Cup Milk 1 Large Egg 2 Tablespoons sugar 1 1/4 teaspoon yeast or 1/2 package yeast 1 teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoons softened butter 1 1/2 Cups BREAD Flour Additional Bread Flour as needed

In microwave heat milk to 110 degrees (warm to the touch, not hot). In a large mixing bowl combine all dry ingredients, including the yeast. Add heated milk, beaten egg and softened butter. With the mixer on low speed and with a dough hook combine until well mixed. Let rest 10 minutes.

Mix again and add the additional flour, the amount all depends on the humidity in the flour, add until the dough is smooth but still slightly sticky, it should pull away from the sides of the bowl.

When you pull off a piece of the dough it should stretch before it breaks, if it does not continue kneading. Place dough into a greased large bowl, big enough to handle twice the size of dough. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in a warm place until double in size about 1 hour, or place in the refrigerator overnight.

Punch down dough and roll out to ½ inch thick. Cut out with gingerbread man cookie cutter. The cookie cutter has to be able to cut through thick dough, mine is about 3 inches tall. Place them onto a buttered or greased cookie sheet. Let rise for about 15 minutes, 30 minutes if dough is cold.

In a large frying pan place about 1 inch of cooking oil. Heat to 325- 350 degrees. Carefully place about 5 snow angels in the hot oil. Cook until brown on first side, about 3 minutes. (They will puff up, we made jokes that some were Santa.) Turn them over and cook on the other side another 2 minutes. Remove from oil and place onto plate lined with a paper towel. Continue with the rest of the Snow Angles. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, or cinnamon sugar, or spread on Nutella, or honey. Eat while hot.

** You can just cut them into squares and call them Utah Scones!
